- Provided $4,000 in funds to Holy Childhood Pre and Primary Schools, Moshe, Tanzania for textbooks.
- Provided $4,000 in funds to TEKUA NGO, Usa River, Arusha, Tanzania for school supplies.
- Provided $10,000 in funds to the Cheju Marine Secondary School, Zanzibar, Tanzania, East Africa.
- Helped to secure $1000.00 British pounds from The Tanzania Development Trust for Cheju Marine Secondary school to be used for textbooks.
- Worked with the Britain Tanzania Development Trust (http://www.btsociety.org/) to obtain refurbished lab equipment from LabAid Trust (www.labaid.org) for the Cheju Marine Secondary School.
- Facilitated, along with Tanzania Development Trust, donations of 10PCs from Computers 4 Africa (www.computers4africa.org.uk ) for the Cheju Marine Secondary School.
- Began work to support the Cheju Wisdom Center, Zanzibar, Tanzania, East Africa.
- We obtained our official 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit organization with the United States Internal Revenue Service. This will enable us to continue to support education for disadvantaged students in Tanzania.
- Donations to Elimu Africa paid for a stove for the Second Chance Education Center (SCEC) and paid teacher’s salaries.
- We developed an accountability system so that our donors can be assured that their contributions are being used to support our mission: To help support disadvantaged students in Africa by facilitating their pursuit of education, which is vital to combating the cycle of poverty, disease and abuse.
- We assisted The Britain Tanzania Society in obtaining a $2600.00 grant from Friends of Tanzania for projects at SCEC. We thank these two organizations for their compassion and generosity.
- Dick McMorrow, EA co-founder and board member traveled to Tanzania with 10 of his high school students and parent chaperones. Dick conducted a needs assessment with school administrators, worked with his students as well as SCEC students, helped build a large garden for the school and still had time to take his students on safari.
- Joelle Rosser, EA Vice Chair continues to spend time assessing the needs at SCEC, working with the students, networking with other educational organizations, and starting a health outreach program with a local women's group. Joelle will be in Tanzania until September, 2008.
- We initiated communication to coordinate efforts with several international groups who are also supporting SCEC. These include the Inter-Community School of Zurich, Zurich Switzerland; http://www.icsz.ch and the American Cairo College, Cairo Egypt; http://www.cacegypt.org
- We assisted several outside volunteers to travel to Tanzania work at SCEC.
Over $14,000.00 in funds were raised due to the generosity of our donors! Thanks to all who support lifting kids out of poverty by supporting their education.
- Funds were used to support daily operations at the school, pay teachers salaries and support the school lunch program.
- Elimu Africa purchased 3 computers for the SCEC computer lab.
- Elimu Africa co-founder, Dick McMorrow traveled to Tanzania to work at the school, set up a computer lab and do a needs assessment at the school.
- Elimu Africa Vice Chair, Joelle Rosser began a year long volunteer trip to Tanzania to work with SCEC students, act as Elimu Africa representative with school administrators and do a needs assessment at the school.
Elimu Africa Accomplishments for 2006
In our fall fund raising campaign 2006, Elimu Africa raised over $13,000.
In 2006, funds and resources were provided to support the Second Chance Education Center and accomplish the following:
- Vice Chair Joelle Rosser spent 3 weeks at the Second Chance Education Center to work with students and do a need assessment for Elimu Africa.
- Funds and resources were provided to support the Second Chance Education Center and helped accomplish the following:
~ Teachers were added and given a much needed salary increase.
~ A parent board was formed.
~ A debate and sports program was formed.
~ The old classroom was refurbished.
~ The fifty-four students were split into two classes to accommodate scholastic levels; Forms 1 and 2.
~ Preparations were made to add a new class for Form 3 in 2007. Seventy students are expected in 2007.
~ Really big news: After hours of paperwork and effort, SCEC was granted official status as an official Non-governmental Organization (NGO).
Congratulations to 6 students from SCEC!
After much preparation, the first group of SCEC students to ever take national exams went to the Mawazi Test Center in October. Of the 20 students who passed the exam at Mawenzi, 6 came from SCEC!!! Mama Lucy Renju commented “We scooped 35% of those who passed.”
- Joelle Rosser raised $950.00 in February, 2007 by conducting a penny wars campaign, having a walk-a-thon and selling kangas (beautiful African wraps). These simple fundraising ideas can amount to big funds which when sent to Africa, can be stretched further than the California coast where Joelle lives.
